THE YOUNG FOLKS

By ASHLEY BULAYO

"...TRISTN is the epitome of hardwork. When we first read about her and what she’s done so far, we easily learned she’s a hustler and doesn’t give up her fight to reach her dreams.... if you close your eyes, can just imagine playing on the movie soundtrack..."

- ALBUM REVIEW

BY REBECCA HASLEM

"... “Anywhere But Here” rolls around and the tempo picks up again, it’s a huge relief. The song itself is far from great, but the thumping of guitars and pounding of drums is more than enough to have this reviewer at least smiling again and believing that things are about to vastly improve, which they do thanks to the electro-pop vibe that reverberates throughout “Simple..."

She released a debut song "Nothing to Say (Nothin’)" in November 2016. The music video was premiered on VEVO, directed by herself.
On June 10, she dropped live studio recording video for "So Suddenly", which is included on her debut album.

"...A record with a fun energy from the start, TRISTN certainly knows how to create some great pop tracks. "Anywhere But Here" is the new single by NY-based, eclectic pop/rock songstress/music producer TRISTN, off her upcoming album, "January," due for release on September 8th. Enjoy!

WONKY SENSITIVE

New York-based songstress TRISTN, who first came to our attention back in early June with her previous single "Sky Wide Open", is back with yet another anthemic and upbeat alternative pop/rock gem called "Anywhere But Here", which also serves as the latest single to be lifted from her upcoming debut album, January, due for release on September 8th.

INDIE MINDED

"...“”Anywhere But Here” is about escaping from a frustrating, sad reality. TRISTN recalls being fearless as a child and yearns for that fearlessness again on this track. The track was produced by Steve Kupillas (Oak and Ash, Brand New), and TRISTN. January represents a new beginning: “Everyone gets a new one every year.”"

IMPOSE MAGAZINE

New York’s pop/rock musician TRISTN is prepping to release her new album titled January in the hot hot heat of the summertime. As she gets ready for that big feat, she’s actually ready to share the next single, an upbeat track entitled “Sky Wide Open”. A track that addresses the issue of selective sight – or choosing how you view the world instead of seeing it for what it is is -, “Sky Wide Open” drops some lyrical knowledge with TRISTN’s signature light as a feather vocals. You can’t help but bob your head and tap your feet – as cliche as all of that seems – as she implores you to “open your eyes” repeatedly so you can “see the sky wide open.” She doesn’t have to convince us.

MUSIC CONNECTION - REVIEW

"...The song’s energetic 4/4 beat and guitar-driven energy are strong and promising, but her lead vocals never get a chance to rise above the clamor. That said, TRISTN is a songwriter with a knack for pop hooks. And her voice (what we can hear of it) has its moments, as on “Anywhere But Here,” that are appealing and even seductive."

PEV: Thinking back to when you first started out, do you ever look back on your career and think about your earlier days and how you’ve arrived where you are today?

TRISTN: I don’t think I’ve arrived at a destination in my career where I could look back yet. Right now I have to stay focused and look straight ahead. The times I look back are usually when I write music about experiences in the past. Other times would be when I want to remind myself to keep moving, that I’ve gotten through a lot of tough times. We had a listen:

This is pure, slippery and abrasive architectural happiness.

With angular blocks of sound pushed against the sweet chirruping voice.

The melody lines remind us of “Hey! You! Get off of my cloud” [Stones, 1965] with the kind of disjointed yet highly effective production [Trevor Horn] that we might associate with those synth-rock Russian superstars T.A.T.U.

A triumphantly joyous fragment of heart chips.

UNAPOLOGETIC TRACK “NOTHING TO SAY (NOTHIN’)”

"Complete with catchy hooks it is hard not to want to dance along. The beat is simple yet infectious beat is complemented with sampled chicken sounds (not even kidding on this one, what a great addition). While it feels like a 2005 pop-track, it is everything but that. The rocker edge that TRISTN possesses shines through on the track, making it unique to her individualistic sound and look. I honestly can’t remember the exact moment I started, haha. I guess it was 3 years ago when I started writing and playing full-time. I’ve been writing songs since I was a kid but this time I started producing, too. My music falls into the Alt/Pop, Rock sound."

Do you face any challenges as an indie musician in a digital age? On the flip side, how has technology helped you (if it has)?

" Yes, definitely. I love challenges, they push me to do better, be better, and try harder, especially in the digital age where we have access to everything and everyone. The challenge in the digital age is that we can publicize our art at the push of a button. There’s no filter. If we want to publish our music independently, we need to be more careful with the content that we choose to release since there’s no one to tell us that it’s not that great, haha."
